Learn all about OPTIFAST
OPTIFAST works differently than other diet models, since it is medically supervised. Goals and strategies are discussed regularly to give you the support you need. The OPTIFAST Program succeeds because it treats the whole you – not just your weight. With OPTIFAST, you’ll be closely monitored and given the support, counseling, lifestyle education, and meal replacements to help you enjoy long-term weight loss and significantly reduce weight-related health risks.
How does it work?
The success of OPTIFAST is related to the portion controlled, calorie controlled foods with a limited selection of products. This is a stimulus-narrowing program. You are given the opportunity to take a break from food, while still receiving all the nutrients and vitamins that your body needs on a daily basis. When you take out the guesswork of what to eat and how many calories it has, what is the nutritional value, it lets you evaluate the relationship that you have with food. To be able to find out why you eat what you do, and when you do.
We are here every step of the way for you to help achieve and sustain a better health with weight loss, nutrition, exercise, and life style changes. Counseling and support groups are an essential part of any weight loss program to guide you through the path of healthy living. Our staff of experts to teach these sessions with you in mind and understands the challenge that you are facing.
We have on going personalized support for you both during your weight loss and after, to help you maintain long term.
Why lose weight?
Obesity can lead to health risk increases. Such as with high blood pressure, type II diabetes, high cholesterol, gallbladder disease, coronary artery disease, sleep apnea, and even cause issue with fertility and the ability to become pregnant.
A 5-10% weight reduction of your total body weight (Medically significant) will decrease these risks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I eat regular food while on this program?
On the typical full-meal replacement program, it does not include regular food. OPTIFAST products are full-meal replacement food that will give you 800-1200 calories a day. Providing high quality protein and 100% of the Daily Value for 24 vitamins and minerals in your number of recommended daily servings. This gives you a chance to take a break from food, not worry about counting calories, while receiving all the nutrition your body needs. After the active weight loss phase there is generally a transition phase that allows you to put regular food back into your diet.
Will I regain all the weight I lost once I eat regular food?
Our patients will transition from their liquid/bar diet to conventional foods over a 6- week period. While they usually continue to lose weight it will be at a slower rate. Some people may experience a slight transient weight regain during this time while they learn to incorporate regular foods back into their diet. Those patients who do gain some weight typically experience no more than a 2-pound regain and it tends to happen when they add starchy carbohydrates back into their diets. This small weight regain is due to two factors:
- Solid food simply weighs more while it is being digested in the intestine than liquid/bar diet products.
- Digesting carbohydrates and sodium requires the body to retain more water.
Do I have to exercise to lose weight and keep it off?
It is very hard to lose weight on any program if you don’t have a component of exercise with it. You will need to look at your energy needs. Weight Loss only happens when you use more calories then you take in i.e. Calories in vs. Calories out. Physical activity provides many long-term health benefits like preventing illness, injury and disease.
Won’t strict dieting ruin my metabolism?
Research by Wadden and associates demonstrates that dieting does decrease resting metabolic rate (RMR). The more strict the diet, the more it depressed the RMR. This is the body’s natural response to a food shortage. The study went on to find that RMR increases as calorie intake increases. At six months after OPTIFAST Program participation, there was no difference in the RMR of people who lost weight using the 420 Calorie/day OPTIFAST liquid diet and those who lost weight using a 1200 calorie/day reduced-calorie diet of conventional foods. The standard OPTIFAST Program now provides a minimum of 800 calories a day.
How much weight should I expect to lose per week/month?
The average weight loss on the full-replacement program is 2-7 pounds a week, with the first month being an average or 12-14 pounds.
How long does your program last?
The typical full-replacement program runs 18 weeks. 12 Weeks of active weight loss with a 6 week transition back to regular foods. Our programs are personalized to the individual needs of each patient.
I have several health problems, type II diabetes and hypertension. Will I be safe with this program?
This is a medically monitored program, with Dr. Alldredge and his nursing staff to follow and help you every step of the way. Since obesity and being overweight are large contributing factors to many diseases, many times losing weight will help to improve your condition by reducing your blood pressure and decreasing the diabetes medications by up to 50% or more.
Will my insurance cover this program?
Most insurances do not cover weight loss programs. You can call your insurance to make sure. You can however, use your flex spending to help cover the program cost. If you are an employee of Nestle or a sister company, please let us know. As a company they do provide some coverage for the program.

We would love to see you in the office at least once a week while we are monitoring your weight loss and managing your health conditions. It will be tailored for each individual.
